bullet Albert Edward Backhouse(1) (2) was born on 7 Mar 1902 in Woolwich, London, SE 18. He was a Baker's Roundsman before 1925 in Groom's Bakery, Northumberland Heath, Erith. Note from Brian Backhouse. My father walked daily to work from his home at 20 Oak Street, Woolwich, to Groom's Bakery at Northumberland Heath. He would have to prepare the horse, load the bread etc. and carry out the deliveries. On his return to the bakery he would have to groom and feed the horse and then walk back home. This was a round trip of some 26 miles, 7 days per week. On Sunday he would have to go to the bakery and see to the horse. There were no deliveries on a Sunday. He died on 1 Jan 1978 in 30 Westlands Road, Herne Bay, Kent. (3) He was cremated 7/8 January 1978 in Thanet, Kent Crematorium. I cannot remember the exact location of the Crematorium. Dad's ashes however were scattered in the Garden of Remembrance, Herne Bay Cemetery.
The inscription of his date of death is inscribed on the head stone of my mother's grave. On his retirement he was a Chief Electrical Test Inspector with Siemens Engineering at Charlton. During the war years he firstly worked with Burndepts  (later to become Vidor) at Erith and then went to their factory in Dundee as Works Manager.  He was involved in the invention of the dry cell batteries as we know them today. He later went to the Ever Ready Battery Company on the instructions of the then War Office and after the war joined Siemens at Charlton  where he remained until his retirement.
Parents: Frank Benjamin Backhouse and Frances King.

He was married to Nellie May Harrison on 26 Dec 1925 in Holy Trinity Church, Charlton, Kent. (4) Children were: Brian Albert Backhouse .

My father at one time bred and raced greyhounds and my first involvement in this sport came with an incident at a "flapping track" at Fanny on the Hill (there's a name to conjure with), Plumstead  when a dog that he had bred and trained was in the lead by some lengths on the final bend.  I called it by name and it stopped and came to the fence. It was an outsider  and my father reckoned that my action had cost him several hundreds of pounds. (A large sum in those days).
I think he got his own back about a week after his funeral.  The local bookmaker who came to the service told me that my father had a large amount of money owing to him from this bookmaker.  I, assuming it to be really only a small amount, told the bookmaker to treat all the customers in memory of my father. He said that he would do that and any monies left over would be paid into a charity.  Some months later I had a letter from this charity thanking me for the donation of £5000.  I never told my mother, I think she would have died with shock.
He was a good father and I thank him for the support he gave me in my early years.   It is to my regret that I never did tell him just how much I loved him.  It is, I think, an omission that many sons make.

Note 30 October 1999.  Since entering the above information I have since obtained other information from the web sites of   Richard Minick http://www.ancestry.com
and Janet Reakes http://www.angelfire.com/or/evercreech/ relating to entries for him and Ann Boyce.  There are some discrepancies eg. Benjamin John is shown as John and his occupations vary at different times.  eg. In 1833 he is shown as a barber at the time of his wifes death. The spelling of Ann is sometimes shown as Anne. Other than that, other dates, places,  kin and children match. I have therefore left his name as being Benjamin John throughout all entries in relation to him.  However, as we have found out the hard way - don't take everything as "Gospel".
I would commend Janet Reakes site on Evercreech.

"The surprising thing about Jean's Wedding Day (Friday 2 pm.) was that she didn't know she was getting married until 10 am. that morning).
I had the previous week borrowed £5. from Tony Mellish to purchase a Special Licence. This was as a result of Jean seeing a David Frost program on the television on "Love & Marriage". Following the program she asked me what it was like to be married. I thought that she felt she was missing something so I decided to surprise her.
I came off duty that morning from the Town Hall. (We were preparing for the yearly visit of the Lord Mayor of London). (I was Mayoral Chauffeur & Ceremonial Attendant at this time. The Mayor of Bromley at this time was Alderman Fred Packer). .I gave Jean £5 and said "Go and get your hair done as we are going to a wedding this afternoon" Then I told her whose. He served in the military between 1914 and 10 Jan 1919 during World War I in England, France, Germany and Salonica, Greece*. SE 8511 Pte Frank B. Backhouse, Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
""Served with honour and was disabled in the Great War. Honourably discharged on 10 January 1919".
Signed: George R.I."

His disablement was that he had been gassed

Tamar Street  (off Woolwich Road) was about 1/2 mile from Oak Street and still exists to this day although much rebuilding is evident. Sand Street and Oak Street are no longer there.

* Salonica above.  It is not very widely known amoung the younger generation that at some time during the conflict Greece was not on the side of the Allies in World War I and it wasn't until after the invasion of Greece by Allied Forces that Greece eventually came on to the side of the Allies after the Abdication of King Constantine I

He died on 17 Mar 1945 in Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, Kent.  I can remember visiting my Grandfather shortly before his death at the hospital. In those days the ward was in the old wooden huts. His address at that time was 20 Oak Street, Charlton, London. (Then Kent). He was buried on 24 Mar 1945 in Woolwich New Cemetery, Plumstead. (14)  It is interesting to note that the total cost of my Grandfather's funeral by the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society for a Hearse & 2 Limousines was £21 10s (shillings) compared to nearly £1000 for my father's funeral 33 years later and £1800 for my daughter's funeral in October 2000

Prior to their marriage my Grandparents were in service to the Royal Family at Royal Sandringham where my Grandfather was a groom and my Grandmother a maid to the Princess Alexandra.    Because at that time no servant could be married to one another whilst in service they had to leave Royal Sandringham on announcing that they intended to marry. They then moved to the Woolwich area where they were married from 18 Oak Street where my Grandfather's brother Tom lived with his wife Rose, they then moved in next door to number 20.

It was because of my Grandfather's service as a groom at Royal Sandringham that he joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corp.

Following their marriage in 1900 my Grandparents moved to 20 Oak Stree later that year from 32 Tamar Street. I am not too sure what accommodation they would have had at Royal Sandringham but number 20 was a 2 up 2 down terraced house with a scullery and the proverbial "thunderbox" outside in the backyard. At that time too, his brother Tom and his family lived at 18 Oak Street.

Speaking to Donald today (6 May 2001) we both remember the outside toilet and that on the wall was a picture of the "Charge of the Light Brigade" What I didn't know was that my father and his two sisters (Doll & May) shared a bedroom separated from each other by a curtain. This also had to be the room where the younger sister Lucy also shared until her early death.

The front room looking out onto the Charing Cross -  Kent Coast line was the proverbial "best parlour". I can only remember seeing it once when I took a sneak look on one of my weekly visits with my father.

I also remember the occasional visit to the pub (outside sales) to get the occasional jug of beer for my Grandfather. I forgot to ask Donald if he made a regular trip to get this beer at other times.

Why his mother went to Windlesham, Surrey from Evercreech is a mystery as is how my Grandfather got to Royal Sandringham.

On his mother's ( Elizabeth Martin) death in Windlesham in March 1898 she left him her bed, metal frame with brass bed knobs.  When my Grandmother died this bed unfortunately was disposed of, I really would have liked it.  I wonder now how it was transported from Windlesham in Surrey to Charlton, a distance of over forty miles.

Source of Birth: Free BMD - entry  Backhouse, Florence May, Woolwich March 1904, 1d 1310

Following the death of her husband Ernest Lock in 1964 Aunt May sold up and moved to Creech St Michael, Somerset in 1966 and as my cousin Barry's wife Brida said "it was as though she wanted to return to the Backhouse Family Roots (Evercreech, Somerset).  Brida says that she made many friends in the village and eventually Aunt May moved into a "Granny Annexe" built onto their bungalow.  As the years progressed Aunt May developed Senile Dementia and it was recommended that she be moved into a residential nursing home after cousin Barry & Brida had looked after her for several years. It was in this nursing home that Aunt May fell and broke her hip. Following this fall she became very poorly and rapidly went "downhill" and died 29August 1885.  It is perhaps fitting that I add the following in Brida's own words "I have always been proud to call her my Mum in law , she used to walk our children miles they loved her she was a great Mum and Nan".

I have updated Susan's entry today 14 January 2001 - it has taken me all these weeks to put a final end to her "chapter of life". There is an old expression that parents do not expect their children to depart this life before them and the shock of Susan's passing is one that I still feel deeply.  However, when she was first diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 10 her then Consultant told us that her life expectancy would only be till her mid to late 20s. She was 46 when she died so I suppose that one could say that she "gained" an extra 20 years.  She was a caring girl, devoted to her children in spite of difficult home circumstances and I loved her dearly.  I hadn't seen her for over 12 months but had spoken to her just a couple of weeks prior to her death.  When I asked then if she was taken her tablets regularly she said Yes and hadn't "fitted" for some time - in fact we found out that she had taken no medication in 9 months and was "fitting" some two or three times weekly. She spent most of her last couple of weeks following our phone call sitting in a chair doing nothing.  I feel she "gave up the ghost". Why her husband or eldest son, (knowing that she wasn't taking medication and "fitting" frequently). didn't get in touch I cannot understand and I feel very bitter.
