bulletMasie Lilian Harrison(1) (2) was born 15 June 1918 in Charlton or Woolwich, London.
She died about 10 Jun 1981 in Erith, Kent.

Maisie was born Downs Syndrome. In those days they were called "Mongols" and invariably placed into an Institution. Masie in fact was kept by her mother and mostly looked after by her sisters. She had a language all of her own. I was "Dear Boy Brian". A television was called "Michael Wild", because the first program she saw on a tele was the film, "Spring in Park Lane" with the actor 'Michael Wilding', hence "Michael Wild". I remember she kept many dolls (Lord only knows what happened to them).
She spent many years after my Grandmother died being looked after by my Aunt Con and also by my cousin, Jennifer.
I will be very much surprised if there is a Birth Certificate.

Maisie died whilst living with my Aunt Con at Plaxtol Road, Northumberland Heath, Erith, Kent

She was buried in 1983 in Herne Bay Cemetery, Herne Bay, Kent. She was christened.. I think my mother at some time lived at Leigham Avenue, London, SW16, (Streatham) just off the South Circular Road, London.

Parents: William Henry Harrison and Florence Elizabeth Reid.

She was married to Albert Edward Backhouse on 26 Dec 1925 in Holy Trinity Church, Charlton, Kent.(30) Children were: Brian Albert Backhouse.

I remember my mother with love and fondness in spite of the fact that she was, at times, a pretty vindictive woman with a spiteful tongue.  In my early days with Jean I once took her to Herne Bay (with June, our first) where my mother was staying at the family caravan. My mother glared at us and said "I told you not to bring that 'Tart' here. (We left). It wasn't until a couple of  years later, when Jean finally stood up to her and 'bawled her out', that my mother and Jean became good friends and remained so until the day Mum died.
Like so many other women during the 1939-1945 war years "she would make do and mend". She ensured that I never went without food or clothing and was a source of great strength during the air raids. It was at her instigation that my parents in 1942 decided to "take a chance on the air raids" and purchase a house in Bexleyheath (if it had been bombed they would have lost everything) for the then, enormous sum of £750.  My father then had to go to Scotland with his Company so my mother decided to go to work at the local Co-op Greengrocers in Brampton Road where she remained until 1950 when she was stricken with Arthritis. In spite of several 'near misses' from bombs, "doodle-bugs" and V2 rockets, the house eventually became theirs. They sold up in 1963/1964 and moved to a bungalow in Herne Bay where they finished out their days.

bulletWilliam Henry Harrison(1) (2) was born 20 November 1854 in  Birmingham, (The 1901 Census states Sutton, Warwickshire).
He died on 20 Dec 1930 in 194 Charlton Lane, Charlton. Note from Brian 6 July 1999 - Information relating to birth date has come from Burial Records, at Woolwich Town Hall and family memories  I am told that his father was Thomas Harrison whose occupation was a porter then a tailor. (I have no further details as yet). William Henry was a Power Station Patrol Constable before 1930. (31) . Mrs Askew of the Cemetery Records Office, Registry Office, Woolwich Town Hall spoke to me this morning and gave me the information relating to William Henry Harrison's Burial. Occupation on their records shows him as being a Power Station Stoker. I wonder if this information has been confused with the informant who could be William's son, who also was William, known to me as Uncle Bill. . Date of Death taken from an "In Loving Memory Card" from Funeral Furnishing Department, Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society, Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich SE.18. The card reads "In Affectionate Remembrance of William Henry Harrison, Who died the 20th December, 1930, Aged 75 years, Interred in Charlton Cemetery, 24th December 1930. As it was in my mother's possessions I assume the card was hers. . He was buried on 24 Dec 1930 in Charlton Cemetery.(32) Also buried in the same grave as William Henry Harrison is Arthur William Thompson husband of Edith, (Aunt Ede).
Note from Brian 7 September 1999.

I understand that there was another child, Dorothy, who died of Diphtheria aged two.   This information is from my cousin Jennifer who says "My Mum only knew of her from what she heard from Gran so she must have been one of the first to have been born.   Apparently only a toddler, she used to tell things to "her Jesus" and Gran said that she was too good to live long".

On examining birth dates of some of the elders of the Harrison Family it is apparent that some were born "out of wedlock".

There is some mystery as to when my Grandparents actually "got together".   There is a gap from 1881 to 1900 relating to William Henry's whereabouts.

In the 1881 Census he is shown as living at 34 North Road, Deptford St Paul, (then Kent) with his first wife Mary Ann Harrison, his occupation a Railway Engine Stoker

**Prior to their marriage my Grandparents were in service to the Royal Family at Royal Sandringham where my Grandfather was a groom and my Grandmother a maid to the Princess Alexandra.    Because at that time no servant could be married to one another whilst in service they had to leave Royal Sandringham on announcing that they intended to marry. They then moved to the Woolwich area where they were married from 18 Oak Street which was where Grandfather's brother Thomas was living with his wife Emma,  they then moved in next door to number 20  in  late 1901.

It was because of my Grandfather's service as a groom at Royal Sandringham that he joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corp.

I have spent many a long night trawling through the internet in search of the birthplace of my Grandmother. This week (4 May 01) I heard from my cousin Donald Llewellyn Kingdon. in reply to a "help" message" from me.

He has been a mine of information, not only with the Backhouse family with with his own namesakes the Kingdon family. With his help I finally managed to trace Grandmother's birthplace to  Ticknall, Derbyshire. Why I never asked him before I shall never know.

It is  probable that my Grandmother in 1881 was in service to John Harper Crewe (Baronet) and Lady Crewe at Calke Abbey, Calke, Derby at the same time as her father John King. Leaving at some time after this to go to Royal Sandringham until leaving in 1900

Note from Brian:  I think I should mention that my Uncle Charlie & Aunt Doll were two of the nicest people anyone could wish to meet. Up until the early 1960's they ran a Fish & Chip shop on the corner of Sand Street and Oak Street, Charlton and lived on the premises.  The area was rebuilt in the mid 60's (?) and so many of the locations from my childhood memories have now gone.  My Uncle was called up for military service during the 1939-1945 war and the Fish Shop was closed until his demob. Unlike the gas generated fish fryers that are used today Charlie's was coal fired.  This entailed great skill in getting the dripping to the right temperature and keeping it at that so as the fat didn't burn. Each working day he would make the early morning  trip to Billingsgate Fish Market to purchase the fish fresh, fetch it back to the shop and prepare it.   I remember that there were always enormous queues of people waiting to be served, proof in itself that his "Fish & Chips" were of outstanding quality. To this date I have never tasted any other "fish & chips" that were as nice.

At the funeral of Charles in April 1875 my cousin Donald offered me "a pick" from Charlie's personal possessions.  I picked a silk scarf that I had seen him wear numerous times.  I still have it to this day and always wear it when I'm out on social occasions and it always brings back to mind his broad Devon accent.

bulletElsie Kingdon born abt 1877 (see 1901 Census entry below)  in Bristol, Gloucestershire and died in 1973.

Parents were: William Kingdon Senr. and Elizabeth Kingdon (maiden name not known

She married Elias J Leach a clothes presser on 30 May 1898 at St Matthias-on-the-Weir, Broadweir, Bristol . In  about 1913 she was committed to a mental institution where she remained for many years until she was released some time in 1938.

Whereas the age as shown makes her born in 1877 there is no trace of her in the 1881 Census  there is also some confusion regarding Ellen M Kingdon

Contrary to many reports at least one brother did not emigrate.  Charles Kingdon (Senr) moved at some point in time from Bristol to Brixham, Devon where he was a fisherman with his own boat.  He is shown on the 1901 Census as a fisherman and single aged 22.  Due to ill health he and his family moved to the Woolwich area in the late 1920s living in Crescent Road, Plumstead.  It was to here that Elsie was to move to for a short time, after her release from the mental institution in 1938, on a temporary short term basis at the request of her son, (now known as Cary).

My cousin Donald Llewellyn Kingdon. can remember going to the house in Crescent Road when he was young and being told to "shush" because Elsie was asleep upstairs.

Again, contrary to many reports, the Kingdon family gained nothing on the death in 1986 of their wealthy relative.

He married Brida Ann Bond in August 1960 (place not yet known)

Parents: Ernest Lock and Florence May Backhouse.

Children were:  Nicola Ann Lock,   Glyne Barry Lock,   Clare Lynet Lock,   Kieran Louise Lock

Barry was born in Liskeard, Cornwall as Aunt May was evacuated during the 1939-1945 war whilst she was expecting him.  Most women who were expecting in the early years of the war were required to be evacuated. This would leave the hospitals free to accept casualties in the event of Air Raids and ensure that the babies were relatively safe; albeit it wasn't compulsory the "powers that be" didn't take kindly to those who refused.  It was the reason I was nursed in bed at home for 12 months when I returned from being evacuated after only a few months and went down with Rheumatic Fever. These days of course it would have necessitated a spell in hospital, then it was " you made your bed, lie on it".

I remember My Uncle Ernest and Aunt May with great fondness. My father invariably took me at least once a month on a Sunday to Sutherland Avenue, Welling  where they lived      My Uncle Ernest was a milkman, I cannot remember which dairy, but I look back now and think of the early morning hours that he had to put in, rain or shine to deliver the early morning milk to houses. I cannot ever remember him complaining.
Brida tells me that he worked for the Royal Arsenal Co-operative as a dairy foreman but delivered the milk in the early years by horse and cart and then a hand cart. By any standards, hard work.
