I am indebted to  David Humphry for the following information he sent me in reply to a query I raised on the Roots Web BOER WAR Request List.  I attach his reply in full.
Also to David Stevens whose reply is also appended below.

18751 Acting Bombardier CH Reid, 61st Battery Royal Field Artillery, was killed in action at Machadodorp on 16 January 1901. He is buried at Machadodorp Cemetery and his grave is marked by a metal cross.

The 61st was a Howitzer Battery which arrived in Natal in late December 1899 and took part in various actions of the campaign to relieve Ladysmith. They also took part in the later actions at Alleman's Nek (June 1900) and Bergendal (August 1900), on the latter occasion being complimented by General Sir Redvers Buller for the accuracy of their fire. They were part of Buller's force in various actions around Lydenburg  later in 1900.

After your grand uncle's death the battery remained in the Eastern Transvaal but the guns were split between two different columns and the lines of communication.  In December 1901 it was one of 6 batteries converted to Mounted Rifles because mounted troops had become more necessary than artillery batteries after the war had entered it's guerrilla phase.

His name will also be on the impressive artillery memorial in the Mall in London. It is situated near the Trafalgar Square/Admiralty Arch end and the names are arranged by batteries.

From David Stevens:
According to the Boer War Casualty Rolls Acting Bombardier C. Reid of 61 Battery RFA was accidentally killed at a place called Machadodorp on January 16, 1901. A Sergeant was also killed and four other men slightly wounded on the same day (all from 61 Battery) in the same accident.

I understand that there was another child, Dorothy, who died of Diphtheria aged two.   This information is from my cousin Jennifer who says "My Mum only knew of her from what she heard from Gran so she must have been one of the first to have been born.   Apparently only a toddler, she used to tell things to "her Jesus" and Gran said that she was too good to live long".

I have found two Death entries in Free BMD under Wandsworth, September 1899, Volume 1d page 545. They read Dorothy Florence Harrison age two and Dorothy Florence Reid age two. Co-incidental??

On examining birth dates of some of the elders of the Harrison Family it is apparent that some were born "out of wedlock".

He  married Margaret Thatcher (nee Roberts) in 1951, she became the first woman Prime Minister of Great Britain. Each morning he used to storm into the office, say to me "cigarettes" and I would have to go and buy him a packet. It was always difficult to get the money from him. She was married to Brian Albert Backhouse on 24 Mar 1972 in Bromley. (49) A note from husband Brian.
"The surprising thing about Jean's Wedding Day (Friday 2 pm.) was - She didn't know she was getting married until 10 am. that morning).
I had the previous week borrowed £5. from Tony Mellish (money was always 'tight' and I was invariably skint) to purchase a Special Licence. This was as a result of Jean seeing a David Frost program on the television on "Love & Marriage". Following the program she asked me what it was like to be married. I thought that she felt she was missing something so I decided to surprise her.
I came off duty that morning from the Town Hall. (We were preparing for the yearly visit of the Lord Mayor of London). (I was Mayoral Chauffeur & Ceremonial Attendant at this time. The Mayor of Bromley at this time was Alderman Fred Packer).I  gave Jean £5 and said "Go and get your hair done as we are going to a wedding this afternoon" Then I told her whose. I personally think that this turned the occasion into the Wedding of the Year) Jean's face was a picture.
I have loved and cherished her from that day to this".

bulletSimon Rowe(2) was born on 21 Nov 1961 in Farnborough Hospital, Bromley, Kent. He was adopted in 1962 in Bexleyheath, Kent..(50) Note By Brian.
In the early 1960s illegitimate children were frowned upon. In this modern day and age Jean would have been a single parent strongly supported by all.
Then, unfortunately, it was near enough compulsory to have your illigitimate child adopted.
The great pity is that I walked with Jean to the Magistrates home when Jean had to sign the adoption papers. We didn't know then of course that we would become as one. With the terrible experiences that Jean had prior to our meeting and subsequently joining together she wasn't to know any different. I, at that time didn't know of Simon. Had I known he would now bear the name of Backhouse. If ever Simon reads this I sincerely hope that he bears his mother no ill will. The fact of his adoption was taken out of her hands. After all these years she still thinks of and mentions him constantly.
The pregnancy came about when a photographer who had a business next door to the shop seduced Jean, who at that time worked at a Grocers (Robert Jackson, Widmore Street) in London.
When Jean told him she was pregnant, his answer was "Tough! So is my wife". I did in fact catch up with him around 1967 when I saw a picture of a naked woman in his photographic shop (Jean's face but not her body) whilst I was chauffeur to the High Commissioner for Malta. The H.C. remarked to me how much like Jean the photo looked. (He didn't know of the connection of course. Neither did I at this particular point although I knew a little of the story). The eventual encounter between him & me was brief but greatly satisfactory to me.
NB. 7 July 1999 - Jean has now written a letter to Simon, I do so hope he does get to read it.
Parents: Jean Ann Rowe.

Note 27 September 1999 from Brian:In the letter to Simon below Jean states that we have been married for 37 years.  As I have stated in the entry relating to Jean & I we have in fact only been married legally for 27 years, having lived together ("in sin" it used to be called) for 10 years. As my Jean says "What difference does a piece of paper make?  Having made a commitment it's the same as being married".
Sorry if this has caused some confusion.

A Letter to Simon.

From Jean Backhouse (nee Rowe) 7 July 1999.

"I have started to write this letter so many times over the years and never completed it, but this time I will. There has to be some place it can be kept in case you do ever try to find me. I feel there has to be a record of your birth and why I had to give you away.

Firstly I’m sure at nearly 38 years old you must know how different things were all those years ago. There was none of the help that single mothers get now. Unmarried mothers were a disgrace and had to be hidden away.

Abortion was not available either; I would not have considered it anyway even then. Also although I was 18 I was not as the eighteen year olds are today. I was very naïve and immature compared with today’s young women. They are women I was still a girl. I am not making excuses for myself it happened and you were the result. Your father turned out to be married with a wife who was also pregnant and when told I was pregnant said, "Try jumping off the table that might get rid of it". Needless to say that was that.

I was four months pregnant when my father found out, my mother had died when I was 12, so there was only him and I. I nearly broke him that day I think, when we sat and cried together, him because he didn’t know what to do and me because of what I had done to him.

I actually went to a hostel and carried on going to work until I had a burst appendix and we both could have died. I then transferred to a Mother and Baby Home (A bit like prison really) with three months to go instead of six weeks but by this time I was beginning to grow up.

I don’t want you to think that your Grandfather was an ogre or a nasty man, he wasn’t, he did what he thought was best for me, as he had no idea what to do. When I was born he was in Burma and didn’t see me until I was three years old so he had no experience of pregnancy. He visited me every Saturday (we were allowed out that day) and brought me extra ‘goodies’ and took me for tea. It must have been pretty awful for him too. He never talked about it afterwards, mainly because he didn’t know what to say. He did see you on the Saturdays after you were born which surprised me, he said you were like Edward, his younger brother.

We were supposed to stay at the home for six weeks after the birth but I went home after a month, as Dad wanted me home for Christmas. A foster home was found for you, with your three of everything neatly packed in a cardboard box. I can picture it now as clear as anything, a "peasouper" fog black as night and I had to hand you over and walk away. I loved you so much it was I think even after all these years the hardest thing I ever had to do.

That really is what this letter is about, I wanted you to know how much I loved you, that I didn’t give you away because I didn’t want you, there were no other choices. I sneaked off and saw you once more before the six weeks were up I wasn’t supposed to but of course I knew where you were and just turned up. I got told afterwards I was not to go again and not long afterwards your adoptive parents came for you.

Even after 38 years and with other children I have never stopped loving the baby I gave away, because whatever you will always be my first born. Recently two friends who knew what I was going to do said two different things. One said that a child who is adopted is twice loved and the other said that although you will always be my son I can never be your mother. Both are right.

I would like to tell you a bit about our family. I have been married for thirty seven years to Brian, he’s 70 this year (I actually met him before signing the final papers, in fact he took me there but didn’t know what for. When he found out he said I could have got you back but I could not have done that to your parents by then they must have loved you as much as I did). They say that for everyone there is a Mr or Mrs Right, well I found mine and I love him more now than all those years ago. We have had bad times but love conquers all. He already had three daughters from a previous marriage and we proceeded to have five more children who are of course your half brothers and sisters.

June is 36 and is married to Nigel and has four sons. Daniel, Jamie, Harry & Joseph aged 13, 9, 4, 9 months. She is a Special Care Baby Nurse and Nigel is a para-medic.

Frances is 35 and married to Allan who works on the Travelling Post Office. They have two children Jack & Hannah aged 10 & 8 (both born on the same day two years apart).

Brian is 34 and divorced with one daughter, Hollie who is 12. He lives here with us and is a Floor Manager at the Shopping Centre.

Timothy is 32 and is married to Lisa, no children yet as although they have lived together 5 years they only got married last July. He is a Security Manager.

Kevin ‘who is my baby’ (he hates that) is 30 and got married two weeks ago to Donna. He had been married before when he was 21 but it only lasted a short time. He is a supervisor in a clothing company. They are all a great lot, obviously we have had problems over the years but we muddled through.

All I ever wanted was a husband and a family and that is what I got. I think I have been a good mother I have certainly tried. I hope one day you do read this and maybe make contact, but for the right reasons. All of my other children know about you I have never made you a secret. I haven’t put any more about your Grandfather, he loved all his grandchildren and I know if things had been different he would have felt the same about you. He came to live with us when he was 6o and had pneumonia, he decided he would retire early and we moved here with our three sons nearly 16 years ago he came as well but sadly he died the following year aged 72 of a massive heart attack. I miss him still, so do we all for that matter.
